Launch of the European MAGICAL Project: Mapping Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases in Urban Environments
We’re proud to announce the official launch of the European project MAGICAL (Mapping Air pollution and Greenhouse gases In Complex urban Ambients at ultra-local Level), a cutting-edge initiative that will develop an advanced platform for mapping urban air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A pressing challenge
Air pollution and greenhouse gases not only harm the environment but also cause millions of premature deaths each year. With new European directives on air quality and climate neutrality (AAQD and Fit for 55), cities urgently need accurate, scalable, and affordable tools to take action.
What is MAGICAL?
MAGICAL will develop the AQG-Platform, an innovative AIoT solution that includes:
- A high-precision urban sensor network
- An advanced air quality modelling system for pollutants and GHGs.
- A digital platform to display real-time heatmaps and support datadriven policymaking
Bettair Cities' leadership
As project coordinator, Bettair Cities is proud to lead this European initiative, reinforcing our position at the forefront of smart environmental monitoring. Our role includes:
- Integrating Senseair’s K96 next-generation sensor into our urban nodes
- Developing the air quality modelling engine and cloud-based visualisation tools to Browsw the air quality modelling data.
- Conducting real-world pilots in Spain and Sweden
- Benchmark performance of solution vs CO2 instruments of ICOS network.
Game-changing technology
The AQG-Platform will enable the generation of high-resolution heatmaps of air pollutants and GHGs across urban areas as well as quantizing emissions sources, factoring in city geometry, weather conditions, and historical data. It will empower cities to understand complex dynamics, enabling a data-driven design of actions as well as to evaluate their real impact like low-emission zones and climate strategies.
Projected impact
The project will directly contribute to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3, 11, 13), enabling cities to:
- Meet new EU air quality regulations (AAQD)
- Monitor GHG emissions at street level with unprecedented accuracy
- Improve public health and urban resilience
- Democratize access to high-quality environmental data
