Through the Smart Anything Everywhere initiative, the European Commission is helping digitise European industry. FED4SAE is part of this strategy, targeting a large network of ‘small’ companies (startups, small/medium enterprises and midcaps), including both technology specialists and low-tech companies.
LoRaWANs are power-efficient and can connect devices over an area of 10-15 kilometres, with ranges extending up to 50 kilometres in some cases. The experiment, which will consist of testing 8 air quality monitors that transmit data using LoRaWAN, will enable us to measure pollution in real time in the City of London in UK and Santander in Spain. Air quality in London has improved in recent years as a result of policies to reduce emissions, primarily from road transport. However, recently updated maps of pollution concentrations for 2013 still show significant areas of exceedances of the annual mean NO2 EU Limit Values. Improvements are planned to address these violations, as recently announced in the Mayor’s program of air quality measures. It is clear that there is a need to measure pollution with high spatial and temporal resolution in order to fully understand how air pollution evolves based on actual measures and to assist in identifying these improvements. Bettair® is the response to this need.
